In the traditions of many cultures, birds are an integral element of the mythological system and can act as deities, heroes or totemic ancestors. Among Ukrainians, totemic ancestors-birds have the features of God the Creator, who acts on cosmic scales: he creates the heavens, the Earth and people. Two or three birds in the picture could symbolize the image of the heavenly family. The birds were the part of a cosmological model of the Universe or could be mediators between two worlds – gods‘ and people‘s . The most common idea in the Ukrainian folk art is a bird, a messenger of happiness and hope. Definetely, the bird is a symbol of mother and motherhood.
